ALABAMA
Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
This
information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions
by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information
found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Though we have

Hours
Required
• For the renewal years 2007 and 2008, 12 credit hours are required. Beginning in 2009 and all years thereafter producers should complete 24 credit hours of continuing education.

Compliance
Date
Licensees born in odd-numbered years. Beginning in the year 2007, the license of an insurance representative born in an odd-numbered year will expire if not renewed at the end of the licensee’s birth month in 2007 and every other year thereafter.
Licensees born in even-numbered years. In the year 2007, the license of an insurance representative born in an even-numbered year will expire if not renewed at the end of the licensee’s birth month in 2007. Beginning in the year 2008, the license of an insurance representative born in an even-numbered year will expire if not renewed at the end of the licensee’s birth month in 2008 and every other year thereafter
Exam
Requirements
Self-study final exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested
3rd party (i.e. someone with no business or family relationship to
the student).
Course
Subject Requirements
• Agents must complete 3 hours of ethics.
• PC agents are required to complete a one-time 3 credit course in flood.
Carryover
Credits
Effective 2009 up to 24 credits may be carried over until the next reporting period.
Course
Repetition
Credit will not be given for course completed more than once in each reporting
period.
Exemptions
• Active members of the Alabama legislature during any part of the biennium.
• Individuals who are at least 60 years of age and have been licensed continuously in Alabama for at least 15 years.
• Individuals who are CLUs, CPCUs, CICs, CHFCs, CFPs, RHUs, REBCs, CHCs, or ARMs.
• Individuals licensed only for lines of insurance for which a license exam is not required.
• Individuals licensed only for automobile physical damage insurance, industrial fire (debit fire) insurance and/or physical damage coverage on household goods.
• Individuals licensed less than one year at the time of the first CE compliance date are exempt on for the first reporting period.
• Non-resident agents are exempt from the CE requirement if they are in compliance with the requirements of their home state.
• Producers or service representatives who do not do outside sales, and who do not hold a nonresident license in any other state, must complete 6 hours including 1 hours of Ethics, annually.
Credit
Reporting
Cape will submit your credit hours to the Alabama Department of Insurance within ten days of course completion. Course completion certificates are provided for your personal records.
