MAINE Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required

24 credit hours, biennially

Compliance Date

The compliance date is the last day of the agent’s birth month, biennially. If an agent was born in an odd year then their renewal period also ends in an odd year; if an agent was born in an even year then their renewal period also ends in an even year.

Approved Course Delivery Methods

• Online self-study courses (passing grade of 70% required on final exam)
• Classroom
• Interactive Online (only 50% of credits may be taken this way)
• Seminar (only 50% of credits may be taken this way)

Exam Requirements

Self-study final exams do not have a monitor requirement.

Course Subject Requirements

Licensees must complete 3 credit hours in ethics each biennium.

Carryover Credits

Excess CE credit hours may not be carried over to the next reporting period.

Course Repetition

Courses may not be taken more than once within renewal period.

Exemptions

• Individuals holding limited licenses (such as title insurance) have no CE requirement.
• Individuals licensed less than one year at the time of the first CE compliance date are exempt for the first reporting period.

Credit Reporting

CAPE will report credits within 30 days of course completion. A certificate of completion is provided for the agent’s records.
