NORTH CAROLINA Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required

Effective January 1, 2008 all adjusters and agents will be required to complete 24 credit hours of continuing education every two years.

Compliance Date

Effective January 1, 2008 the compliance date will be the last day of the licensee’s birth month, based on the birth year (even or odd).
Please see the chart below for information on the conversion period and CE requirements during that period.

Approved Course Delivery Methods

• Written and Online self-study courses (passing grade of 70% required on final exam)
• Classroom

Exam Requirements

Self-study written final exams must be monitored by a disinterested 3rd party (i.e. someone who has no business or family connection with the student.) Online exams do not require a monitor.

Course Subject Requirements

Effective January 1, 2008 all licensees will be required to complete 3 credit hours in ethics every two years, all adjusters, property agents and personal line agents will be required to complete 3 credit hours of flood every four years. All remaining credits may come from any approved course.

Carryover Credits

Effective January 1, 2008 there are no minimum or maximum requirements for CE credit hours to carryover, any amount over the required number of CE hours will carry forward to the next biennial compliance period.

Course Repetition

Courses may not be repeated for credit within a three year period.

Exemptions

Individuals who are least 65 years of age, have been licenses continuously for at least 25 years, and either hold a CLU, CPCU, ChFC, FLMI, or IIA designation or certify that they are inactive insurance agency owners who neither solicit applications for insurance nor take part in the day-to-day operations of the agency.

Credit Reporting

Effective January 1, 2008 Cape will report credits to Prometric within 15 days of course completion. A certificate of completion will still be provided to the licensee for their records.
