DAKOTA Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
This information is intended to provide answers to commonly
asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace
detailed
information found in your state’s statutes and regulations.

Hours Required Effective 08/01/2005
• Agents licensed for life and annuities,
accident and health, casualty, property, and personal lines,
or any combination of these
lines of authority, must complete at least 12 credit hours each
year (24hours biennially).
• Agents with a single line of authority for crop insurance must
complete at least 6 credit hours per year (12 hours biennially).
Compliance Date
• Last names beginning with A-K; January
31st of odd numbered years
• Last names beginning with L-Z; January 31st of even numbered years

• Written and Online self-study courses (passing
grade of 70% required on final exam)
• Interactive Online
• Classroom
• Seminar
Effective 08/01/2005 all CE may be completed through self-study
courses
Exam Requirements
Self-study final exams do not have any monitor requirements.
Course Subject Requirements
• 3
of the 24 hours must be taken in Ethics. The first reporting
period of the Ethics requirement will be 01/01/2007.
• All licensed Property resident insurance producers who sell federal
flood insurance policies under NFIP must complete a one-time 3
credit course related to NFIP.
• Producers who sell, solicit or negotiate long-term care insurance
policies for North Dakota’s Long Term Care Partnership Program
must complete a one-time 8-hour training program before July 1,
2008. After that date, ongoing training must be completed every
24 months.
Carryover Credits
A maximum of 12 hours, earned only in the second half of the biennial
reporting period, may be carried over to the next reporting period.
Course Repetition
Courses may not be repeated for credit within a two-year period.
Exemptions
• Individuals with a limited license for
the sale of title insurance travel insurance, surety bonds, bail
bonds, or group
credit life/accident and health insurance.
• Individuals licensed only for life or sickness, accident and health,
or life and sickness, accident and health who are least 62 years
old and whose combined total continuous years of license plus their
age equals 85 or more and whose new business commissions does not
exceed $10,000.
• Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the calendar year in
which they are first licensed.
• Non-resident agents whose home state has similar CE requirements.
Credit Reporting
Cape will report credits to the North Dakota Department
of Insurance within 15 days of course completion. A certificate
of completion
is provided for the agent’s records.
