RHODE ISLAND Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked
questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace
detailed information found in your state’s statutes and

Hours Required
• 24 credits biennially
Compliance Date
Based on the producer’s month of birth and month of initial licensure. Please contact the Department of Insurance for more specific information regarding your renewal date.
Approved Course Delivery Methods
• Independent self-study online or written courses (passing grade of 70% required on final exam)
• Classroom
• Interactive Online
• Seminar
Exam Requirements
A disinterested 3rd party (i.e. any impartial person who is not concerned with the result of the examination or the success of the student) should monitor all final exams. The monitor cannot be related to the student.
Course Subject Requirements
• Students must complete 3 credit hours in ethics.
• Agents must complete a minimum of 5 credit hours in each line of authority held.
• All licensed Property agents must complete a one time 3 credit hour requirement in flood insurance.
Carryover Credits
A maximum of 24 hours may be carried over to the next reporting period.
Course Repetition
Courses may not be taken more than once in a two-year period.
Exemptions
• Individuals holding a limited line credit insurance license.
• Individual who hold a license line which does not require a final examination.
• Individuals who are at least 55 years of age and have been continuously licensed for 25 years or an individual who is at least 60 years old at the time of renewal and have been licensed for 20 years without a lapse.
• Non-residents are exempt as long as they meet the requirements of their home state.
Credit Reporting
Upon successful completion of a CE course, we will send the licensee a certificate of completion, which is used to transfer information to Rhode Island’s summary report form. This form must be submitted to the Insurance Division upon renewal. Copies of your certificates of completion should be maintained for a minimum of four years in case of an audit by the state.
