TENNESSEE Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
This information is intended to provide answers to commonly
asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace
detailed
information found in your state’s statutes and regulations.

Hours Required
Agents are required to complete 24 hours, biennially
Compliance Date
Biennially. Effective immediately, producers will renew their licenses before the last day of their birth month. Note that all renewals in 2009 will occur prior to the last day of the licensee’s birth month regardless of when the producer renewed or was licensed in 2007. The following two examples are provided to help clarify how these changes will work:
Example 1: A producer last renewed his current license in August of 2007 and his birthday is in September. He will renew his current license prior to September 30, 2009. The next time his license will need to be renewed will be September 30, 2011.
Example 2: A producer last renewed her current license in August of 2007 and her birthday is in July. She will renew her license prior to July 31, 2009. The next time her license will need to be renewed will be July 31, 2011.
Approved Course Delivery Methods
• Independent
self-study online or written courses (passing grade of 70% required
on final exam)
• Classroom
• Seminar (only 50% of the required hours may be earned through this
method)
• Interactive Online
Exam Requirements
Self-study final exams do not have a monitor requirement.
Course Subject Requirements
• All Producers must complete 3 credit hours in ethics, biennially.
• All Producers who sell federal flood insurance must complete a one-time 3 hours requirement in flood insurance.
• Any Producer not license to sell long-term care insurance prior to July 1, 2008 must complete a one-time, eight (8) hour training course in long-term care insurance approved by the Department prior to selling any long-term care insurance product in the state. Those who are licensed to sell long-term care insurance products prior to July 1, 2009 must complete this course by July 1, 2009. After the initial 8 hours producers who wish to continue to sell long-term care insurance are requirement to complete an additional 4 hours of continuing education every twenty-four months. These courses may be counted towards meeting a producer’s twenty-four hour continuing education requirements.
Carryover Credits
A maximum of 12 credits may be carried over to the next reporting
period.
Course Repetition
Credit will not be given for a course that is repeated.
Exemptions
• Individuals who have been licensed continuously in Tennessee since 1994
• Nonresident agents if their home state has CE requirements and has a reciprocal agreement with Tennessee
Credit Reporting
Cape will
report credits to Promissor on the 15th and the 30th of each
month. A course completion certificate is provided for
the agent’s records.
