WASHINGTON Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by insurance agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required

24 credit hours are required biennially

Compliance Date

Licensee’s date of birth, biennially

Approved Course Delivery Methods

• Independent self-study online or written courses (passing grade of 70% required on final exam)
• Classroom
• Seminar
• Interactive Online

Exam Requirements

Final exams have no monitor requirements

Course Subject Requirements

• 3 hours of ethics education must be completed as part of the CE requirement
• Agents can take course from any license type to complete the remaining CE, however the Washington OIC recommends that the agents takes courses within their lines of authority
• Agents selling Long Term Care must complete an approved 4-hour LTC course per renewal period.

Carryover Credits

Carryover of excess credits is not permitted.

Course Repetition

Credit will not be given for a course taken more than once in a three-year period.

Exemptions

• Nonresidents
• Any person holding limited licenses for Credit Life and Disability, Credit Casualty, Travel, Vehicle, or Surety
• Any person who is 65 years of age or older, is retired from active selling of insurance products and no longer represents any insurer or insurance agency.
• Any person who believes that good cause exists may request a waiver of the CE requirement.

Credit Reporting

CAPE will report credits to the Washington Department of Insurance on a monthly basis. We provide a certificate of course completion for the agent’s records.
