Continuing Education Requirements

This information is intended to provide answers to commonly asked questions by real estate agents. It is not intended to replace detailed information found in your state’s statutes and regulations. Hours Required
Post Licensing: All first time salespersons renewing licenses to maintain active status shall complete 36 commission-approved classroom hours by Dec 31 of the third year of licensure.  

       
Continuing Education: 36 Hours in each 3 year renewal cycle.

Compliance Date
All salespersons and all brokers must complete CE prior to December 31st of their renewal year. A renewal period consists of a three (3) year cycle.

Important Renewal Information for 2015: Electronic renewals for those licensees whose licenses expire on Dec 31, 2015 will be available in the middle of November. Expect a renewal reminder postcard in the mail at that time with the website address of the on-line renewal. Please be on the lookout for this and do not disregard it as junk mail. Remember, even if you don't receive a renewal postcard, your are still responsible for renewing your license. your are responsible for notifying the Commission in writing of any change of address. If you have moved and not notified the Commission in writing you must do so immediately by e-mailing realestatecommission@iowa.gov or by FAX (515) 725-9032 to help insure you receive the renewal postcard.

Approved Course Delivery Methods
• Correspondence/self study (passing grade of 70% required on a monitored final exam) A maximum of 24 of the 36 hours may be taken by correspondence/self study method during each 3 year renewal period. All computer based CE must be completed within six (6) months of the date of purchase
• Classroom

Exam Requirements
Self-study final exams do not require a monitor.

4 hours Ethics
24 hours Commission approved Electives

Carryover Credits
Excess credits cannot be carried over to the next reporting period.

Course Repetition
Credit will not be given for course completed more than once in each reporting period. A course may be repeated for credit ONLY if the course numbers and instructors are different.

Other States: Licensees residing in the following states will sign an affidavit verifying that they are abiding by that state's continuing education requirements: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Tennessee.
All other states must comply with Iowa's 36 hour continuing education requirement.

Credit Reporting
Course completion certificates are provided to students upon completion of the course. The commission will verify by random audit the education claimed by the licensee. It shall be the responsibility of the licensee to maintain records that support the continuing education claimed and the validity of the credits. Documentation shall be retained by the licensee for a period of three years after the effective date of the license renewal.
